Now in the XPCC, there are 17 institutions of scientific and technological undertakings with a total number of 4100 professionals and technicians of all specializations. At the end of the 10th Five-Year Plan period, the contribution made by agricultural science and technology accounted for 51 percent and the contribution made by industrial science and technology stood 36 percent. By the end of 2006, every kind of schools and educational institutions had added up to 775 with 594.8 thousand students. Besides, there were also 4 general universities and colleges, 2 adult institutions of higher learning, 23 high and secondary vocational or technical schools, 277 regular middle schools, 295 primary schools and 174 kindergartens. Among them, the number of students in regular universities totaled 35.4 thousand with 1448 postgraduates. The enrolment rate of school-age children had reached 99.5% for primary schools and 92.6% for junior middle schools. All the schools in the farms had passed the check and acceptance procedure of “two national-basic-standards”. The average length of education rose from 7.4 years in 2000 to 9.15 years in 2005.
